At Ida York Design Group we are designers, homeowners, and lovers of color. Part of our job is to constantly engage with new color combinations and palettes to create something new and fresh for each client. One challenge associated with this is creating spaces that feel fresh and timeless while avoiding overly trendy design. One tool that we use is the Sherwin Williams Colormix Color Forecast each year. This is an article produced by Sherwin Williams that outlines forty-two colors and six color palettes that reflect many styles and easily refresh any space. The inspiration for these palettes comes from across the globe in many forms. This includes: the rings of Saturn, a modern cowgirl, 60’s nostalgia, over-the-top-opulence, global style, and butterfly collections. Recently the 2019 addition was released, here are 5 Take Aways from the 2019 Sherwin Williams Colormix Color Forecast from an interior designer’s perspective.
1. Jewel Tones are In
The six color palettes in the 2019 Sherwin Williams Colormix Color Forecast are Shapeshifter, Wanderer, Aficionado, Enthusiast, Naturalist, and Raconteur. The first unifying element of the color palettes is the use of a dark jewel tone. These colors include Nugget SW 6697, Endless Sea Se 9150, Dard Hunter Green SW0041, Rustic Red SW 7593, Argyle SW 6747, and Majestic Purple SW 6545. Your aesthetic dictates the use of each color. If your style is bold, any of these colors would make a great accent wall. If you prefer a more subdued look, a bold accent chair is classic and appropriate.
2. Taupe is Timeless
Over the years many different shades of Taupe have made their way into the Colormix Color Forecast. Taupe is defined as grey with a tinge of brown. This year, the shades of Taupe have a warm and grey undertone to create soft neutrals that pair perfectly with your space. A few of the Taupes that made it into this year’s 2019 Sherwin Williams Colormix Color Forecast are Moth Wing SW 9174, Dry Dock SW 7502, Porpoise SW 7047, Felted Wool SW 9171, and Poised Taupe SW 6039. Each version adds a grounding neutral to any space to let other elements of the design shine through.
3. Grey Undertones
The third unifying element in the Colormix Color Forecast is that many of the colors have a grey undertone. A few of those colors include: Orchid SW 0071, Chelsea Mauve SW 0002, Misty SW 6232, Nebulous White SW 7063, and Distance SW 6243. When each color is not competing for your attention, your room will have a unified color scheme.
4. 2019 will be all about the Blue
Blue is back! This color can be soft, calming, and serene. Blue can be fun, whimsical, and vibrant. These six color palettes showcase the range of styles available while using blue. Our favorites are Wanderer and Shapeshifter.
This palette features a warm soft grey-blue called Distance SW 6243. This is paired with a variety of warm neutrals and an accent color, Cavern Clay SW 7701. This palette allows the color to shine or be the second thing noticed in your room.
This color palette takes warm vibrant hues of blue and uses them in an interesting way throughout the space. These colors include Blue Sky SW 0063, Endless Sea SW9150, Celestial SW 6808, and Dark Night SW 6237. Paired with untraditional neutrals and an accent color of Nugget SW 6697, this palette can be used in a variety of ways. Shapeshifter uses contrasting colors from the same family and share a similar hue. Hue is defined as the shade of a color. Notice that Blue Sky, Nugget, and Celestial all have a similar hue. While Dark Night, Elation, and Extra White are used as contrasting colors. This can provide a visual refuge or creates a focal point.
5. Purple Can be a Neutral
Using neutral colors in your space is incredibly important. Our eye is able to establish a focal point without fighting for attention in multiple places. Neutrals allow your favorite piece of artwork, furniture, architectural feature, or color to shine. They gracefully step into the background and allow the space to feel unified. One color that does not come to mind as neutral is purple. Sherwin Williams has officially done it. Using Elation SW 6827 or Chelsea Mauve SW 0002 as a neutral is unexpected and very successful.
6. Bonus Tip!
Color is your friend. Don’t be afraid to add any of these colors into your space, even in a small amount. One way to create a cohesive home is to add in a few of the same colors throughout to make each space feel unified. Dont be afraid to mix and match any of the colors from these palettes to meet your needs. They are only guidelines, not written rules for style.
