Discover the types of lamps and light their environments

To ensure comfort and warmth in the environments, it is very important to invest in lighting that makes a difference. Therefore, it is essential to know the different types of lamps that exist on the market.

In addition to the arrangement of the furniture, the decorative styles and the use of colors in the spaces, lighting is also a detail that deserves a lot of attention.

Here are some tips to understand what are the best types of light bulbs for each room in your home.

Lamp characteristics

When buying lamps and lighting fixtures, such as lighting fixtures, you will find different options, models, sizes and also lots of information on the lamp labels.

But do not worry! Here are the main and most important features to watch out for:

Power is a measure that indicates the amount of energy a particular lamp consumes. However, this indicative does not necessarily have to do with the luminosity that the lamp shines.

Measured in Watts (W), power is directly linked to consumption and, consequently, to the value that energy spent will bring at the end of the month.

Regardless of the types of lamps, the higher the power, the higher the consumption.

The lumens indicate the measure of light radiation emitted by the lamp, that is, it is the amount of light emitted in each environment. The larger the lumens, the more light is emitted.

Thus, the most advantageous lamp in terms of consumption and economy is the one with the highest Lumens/Watt ratio. After all, by emitting more light using less energy, the lamp provides greater energy savings.

Color temperature

Despite the name, the color temperature is not related to the temperature of each lamp, that is, its physical heat. It is a measure that refers to the hue of color it radiates to the environment, given in Kelvin (K).

The higher the color temperature value, the lighter the color tone of the light. For example, tube fluorescent lamps have a higher color temperature than incandescent lamps, meaning tube fluorescent lamps are brighter.

However, it is important to point out that it is possible to find almost all types of lamps in different color temperatures.

Warm lighting X Cold lighting

Warm lighting aims to enhance sophistication, comfort and warmth in the space. Thus, it is best suited for bedrooms, dining and living rooms, among others, that is, places of relaxation, where it is possible to rest and relax.

While cold lighting has the concept of attention and focus, it is ideal for environments where activities that require concentration and centrality are carried out, such as offices, kitchens, bathrooms, among others.

The different types of lamps that exist have specific types of lighting, so understanding the temperature of each one of them is essential.

Amount of light for each environment

Each room in the house has a need for light that it must receive, so it is necessary to pay attention to the amount of light that each room receives, according to the need, so that your vision is not impaired, and the environment is comfortable and pleasant.

Not using the lighting correctly can disfavor the decoration of spaces, devalue the environment and harm the functions that would be performed in it.

No sin for the lack or excess of light in the environments. The environment and your pocket thank you for your care.

Types of lamps

Now that you know the main features that make up the lamps, you can check out the different types of lamps available on the market.

Incandescent lamps

Despite having been popular for a long time, incandescent light bulbs are old and since 2016 they have been banned in Brazil.

The ban on the sale of incandescent lamps with a power of 41 W to 60 W that do not meet the minimum levels of energy efficiency was instituted by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro).

Types of lamps: incandescent lamp.

For many years, incandescent lamps were widely used in Brazil.

They are yellowish light bulbs with a low cost, but they also represent a higher energy consumption, a short lifetime and a low luminous efficiency.

Also, thinking in terms of physical heat, they are not a good idea, as only 5% of the electrical energy consumed by an incandescent bulb is turned into light, the rest is turned into heat, because the electricity goes through a filament, which is overheated until light is emitted.

Halogen lamps

Halogen lamps are technically incandescent lamps. However, they are different from models with power between 41 W and 60 W and also contain added halogen gases in their internal part.

Typically, the gases can be bromine or iodine and are inserted to enable more efficient recovery of the heat produced. Thus, they allow the lamps not to dim, ensuring greater durability. However, although these lamps better illuminate environments, they also consume more energy.

In addition, they are able to recover more of the heat released, although they also warm up the environment a little. They are good suggestions for use in accent or decorative lighting, such as in gardens, as well as being used in recessed lighting, under cabinets and pendants.

Halogen lamps are sold in stick and dichroic models. They can also be used with dimmers, devices used to vary the intensity of the average electrical current in lamps.

Dichroic lamps

Dichroic lamps are a variation of the halogen lamp, the difference is that they are equipped with a special reflector, whose function is to diffuse the infrared and ultraviolet rays emitted by the lamp.

These lamps reflect all visible light, while also filtering the passage of infrared and ultraviolet rays. This causes the rays to be emitted to the sides and the back of the lamp, rather than going straight forward, along with the visible light.

In this way, the reflector contributes to the heat dissipation of the lamp. Therefore, they are used in places where there are elements sensitive to heat, for example sophisticated decorative objects such as rare paintings, valuable drawings etc.

Fluorescent lamps

Fluorescent lamps work using an ionized gas that emits ultraviolet radiation, which, when passed over a fluorescent layer on the surface of the glass tubes, turns into visible light.

Fluorescent lamps gained a lot of popularity after the ban on the sale of incandescent lamps. Therefore, nowadays, they are the best known and best suited for residential and commercial use.

After all, fluorescent lamps are an economical alternative, have high efficiency and low energy consumption, in addition to a good functionality to light environments, and can even be used as decorative lighting in sconces, floor lamps and lampshades.

In addition, there are different light color possibilities, such as white, bluish, greenish and even yellowish tones, which can be very similar to incandescent.

There is also black light, widely used for decorations, mainly for parties and events. It is composed of ultraviolet radiation combined with a small percentage of visible violet light. In this way, the light emitted by fluorescent lamps is, in large part, produced by the thin white layer that surrounds it, composed of phosphor salts, which convert UV light to visible light.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lamps – LED Lamps

Considered the most modern, LED type lamps are the most economical on the market, as they guarantee a reduction of up to 90% in energy consumption, while they do not emit physical heat, have a high durability, with a much longer lifespan to the others, despite being more expensive.

However, when analyzing your electricity bill, you will find that LED bulbs are very cost-effective.

For example: an LED bulb is equivalent to a 60W incandescent bulb. Its modernity is due to the fact that LED lamps convert electrical energy directly into light energy, in a very agile process.

On the market, you can find several versions, such as: spots, in hose, in different colors and, of course, in the common model. Therefore, they are a good choice for lighting environments in general, as well as good options for composing a decorative lighting.

It is even possible to make directed lighting with steerable focus and pendant type luminaires, for example, and also to control the intensity of the incidence of light using dimmers.

Optical fiber

It is a filament of glass or polymeric elements, such as plastics, rubbers or fibers, which have the ability to transmit visible light.

Light transmission is done through a very fast process that consists of casting a light beam at one end of the fiber filament, until this part of the light travels through the entire fiber through numerous reflections, until the light can be expelled from the other end.

Optical fiber represents a lot of technology and innovation among the types of lamps.

However, it is necessary that there is a light generating source so that this path in the fiber optic cables takes place, being possible to illuminate several other points. And there are no worries about shocks, for example, as the fiber transmits light and not electrical energy itself.

Fiber optic lighting does not emit physical heat, it is compact, that is, it does not take up much space, its maintenance is simple and safe, and it is considered an economical lighting. It can be used as decoration and to highlight certain specific points, such as architectural details, shop windows, gardens and light curtains.

Composed of a tube with neon gas under low pressure in its interior, the neon lamp emits red light when subjected to electricity, until its electrodes inside glow, emitting colorful and bright light.

In this way, it is able to produce different colors of light, being a great option for specific decorations, giving a lot of personality to the decoration, or at parties, get-togethers and events.

Discharge lamps (HID)

For the discharge lamps (HID) to be lit, it is necessary for a high electrical pressure discharge between their electrodes to take place, so that it can cause the internal components of the discharge tube to produce light.

For this reason, the lamps need electronic ballasts so that they are activated and remain on for a certain time. In addition, its process is a little slower when compared to other lamps, as they take 2 to 15 minutes to fully light up.

Among the types of lamps, discharge lamps require more time to light.

However, they are more compact lamps and have low energy consumption, although their light produced is extremely powerful and bright, has high efficiency and long service life. Thus, they can serve as lighting for large areas, such as public roads.

Among the models available for purchase are metallic multivapours, sodium vapor, mercury vapor and mixed lamps.

Filament lamps

Filament lamps are known for the decorative appeal they carry. When lit, the design formed by the filaments inside the glass of the lamp refers to the elegance of the vintage decoration, through the lighting.

Its carbon filaments work as a good choice for decoration, as they visually ensure an interesting appearance. But in terms of consumption, they are not a good choice to serve as main lighting, as they have little power, while energy consumption is high.

In filament lamps, the lights in the filaments are a show in itself.

The lights on the filaments are a show in themselves.

So, if you want to be inspired by the elegance of old lamps, filament lamps are good options to invest in decoration with lamps, chandeliers and pendants.

But if you choose this lighting, try to use it in a few spaces and for short periods of time, after all, saving energy is contributing positively to the Planet.

Smart bulbs

As the name already suggests, smart lamps are special due to the technology they have inside, which contributes to their functionality, customization of environments and control of actions.

They are one of the main elements that make up smart homes, full of automations and uses of objects facilitated by technology. The system of smart lamps allows them to be activated by the smartphone, being possible to manipulate them even outside the home, due to connections via the Internet, connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth networks.

Among the functions they perform are: turning on or off, changing their incidence colors, changing temperature and even luminosity, depending on the model.

Germicidal UV Lamps

They are low pressure lamps, very similar to normal fluorescent lamps, however they are specially designed to produce germicidal UV rays, through a quartz, with an internal phosphor layer, which blocks the rays that generate ozone, converting the UV light to visible light.

The Germicide UV lamp is capable of destroying microorganisms such as bacteria, molds and viruses contained in small droplets of water in the air, which can transmit diseases. Furthermore, it is known for its high radiation yield and efficiency to sterilize environments, surfaces and even the air.

Therefore, it is very important that the lamps are mounted on special devices and positioned so that people are not exposed to direct radiation. For this reason, they are not suitable for residential use, but only for medical areas, laboratories, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.

The most modern and compact lamps with UV Germicide are the most technologically advanced, as they are capable of producing a greater amount of UV-C, which is totally absorbed by oxygen and ozone from the atmosphere, with a longer service life, being more durable.

Decor styles thinking about the types of lighting

For good lighting it is essential to define the style: elegant, simple, classic, minimalist, industrial, etc. Thus, it is possible to understand whether the type of lighting will be more expressive or basic, for example.

Next, it is necessary to think about the organization of the environment, so that it is possible to understand what will be valued from each type of luminaire. Think about your habits and the purpose of each room.

Therefore, another very important step is to define which types of lamps to use. After all, it is essential to dose the light sources in each environment to compose the direct and indirect lighting correctly, always thinking about the heat intensity that each environment has or needs.
