How to Use Facebook URL Parameters with UTMs to Track Your Results in Google Analytics

1 – Build your URL for Facebook Ads

Use this link from the Google Analytics URL Builder and reference the tracking parameters to create a custom URL for Google Analytics  as shown in the table below:

Page URL (required): Enter the address (URL) of your website for which you are going to create an ad.
Campaign Source (required): facebook (always in lowercase)
Campaign Medium (required): If your campaign is cpc, cpm or ocpm
Campaign Name (required): Name your Facebook Ads campaign.
Campaign Term: Provide a description of a term used by your target audience.
Campaign Content: Place the ad content.

 

Important: Google Analytics is case sensitive, so “ utm_source=facebook ” is different from “ utm_source=Facebook ”.

2- Test your URL

Copy the created URL and paste it into your browser. See if it’s linking to the landing page you wanted.

Then go to Google Analytics, if you don’t have it on your site first configure it here in the help center.

If you already have the monitoring of your website in Google Analytics, in the “ Reports ” field, go to “ Acquisition > Campaigns > All campaigns ”. You should see your campaign name.

Note: Make sure you select the “today” field as the date in the chosen period.

3- Track your performance

Once you’ve created a custom URL, you can use Google Analytics in the same way you use it to measure your website’s performance.

Now you can measure results like conversions, sales, form fills, leads and other metrics in addition to the number of clicks coming from your Facebook Ads campaign.
